Expert Diagnosis at the Service of Patients with Breast Disease
As a breast pathology specialist, I commit to providing the best diagnostic services I possibly can to patients with breast disease, directly or through pathologists and clinicians. I believe that one life made better is the definition of success, and a reason to keep moving forward. My dream is to establish a comprehensive center for breast diseases where every woman can get state-of-the-art diagnosis and management whether she can afford it or not.
I developed an interest in breast pathology during my residency at Vanderbilt University, where I seized every opportunity to join the breast consult service sign-out sessions alongside Drs. David Page and Jean Simpson (pictured to my left) and Dr. Melinda Sanders (to my right). The subsequent breast pathology fellowship with my mentors allowed me to deepen my knowledge and experience in breast disease.
Upon joining the Pathology Department at the American University of Beirut in Lebanon, I collaborated with colleagues on various projects related to breast cancer, maintaining a continuous partnership with my mentors at Vanderbilt University. My work resulted in numerous publications on topics such as the risks associated with columnar cell lesions of the breast, characteristics of breast cancer in young Lebanese women, and the reliability of Her-2/neu immunohistochemistry and FISH testing.
I have both presented at and organized numerous breast pathology workshops and conferences worldwide, eventually contributing to the WHO blue book on breast neoplasms. As the new head of the breast pathology section at Washington University, I am working on several projects including diagnostic criteria for high-risk breast lesions, the intricacies of lobular neoplasia, and describing rare and unusual breast neoplasms.
In 2022, I honored a request from my retiring mentor, Jean Simpson, to lead David Page's legendary consult service, a role I accepted with profound gratitude. In April 2023, I began sharing interesting cases and educational content on Twitter/X, targeting both pathologists in training and practicing professionals globally. I am also working on a concise handbook aiming to clarify complex and sometimes contradictory concepts in breast pathology for residents and general pathologists alike.
